Tutti Mangia! 9 Most Authentic Italian Restaurants in Naples FL

by Lori Sorrentino

Heading to the Paradise Coast and looking for authentic Italian restaurants in Naples, Florida? Here are 9 of our favorites!

When it comes to Italian restaurants, Naples FL more than lives up to its name offering plenty of choices from pizzerias to fine dining.

But finding really good Italian? Well, that’s not so easy even in a town called Naples.

That may be the reason it took us a while to find our favorites. After all, when it comes down to it, can we truly find anything “Italian” outside of Italy?

We think we’ve come close — 5,000 miles from the source is the best we can hope for! The 11 eateries listed here are not just excellent Italian restaurants, they’re among the best restaurants in Naples!

For starters, they use fresh ingredients in keeping with the Italian cultural affinity for adhering to seasonality as much as possible as well as traditional cooking techniques and presentation.

Even if some are adding a little twist here and there, they never stray far from their Italian heart and soul.

Some of these restaurants are owned by Italians, some not. Several menus reflect the food of a particular region in Italy, while others offer a variety of cuisine styles from north to south.

What they all have in common is cooking excellent Italian food.

Naples to Naples: Our Story

As second-generation Italians whose grandparents all emigrated to America from the small hilltop towns around Naples, Italy (and one from Siracusa, Sicily) over a hundred years ago, the irony of having finally settled in Naples, Florida is not lost on us.

This alone doesn’t remotely qualify us to judge the authentic Italian restaurants Naples, Florida has to offer.

Being second-generation is a pedigree label and one that residents of Italy could honestly care less about. In their eyes, we’re not Italian-American, we’re simply American.

What does qualify us to write on the subject of authentic Italian food — other than having been raised on a Mediterranean Diet and comforting cucina povera (peasant food) — is our years of traveling and eating in Italy.

From the German-influenced cuisine of northern Italy and the slow food of Piedmont and the Po Valley, to the citrus, spice, and seafood of southern Italian cuisine where our stomachs feel most at home, we’ve tried a bootful of traditional Italian food and written on the subject for national publications as well as our own.

The notion of ‘authenticity’ is certainly subjective. But after years of traveling Italy, we think these 9 Naples restaurants hit closest to the mark for when you’re craving authentic Italian.

You won’t find restaurants here who offer a few menu items “inspired by Italy” on an otherwise something-for-everyone menu. Or places whose only resemblance to Italian are the menu items written in Italian.

Whether you’re visiting Naples, Florida or lucky enough to call it home, start with this short list in no particular order, and see for yourself who is the most authentic Italian restaurant in Naples Florida!

Authentic Italian Restaurants, Naples FL

Barbatella

1290 Third Street South, Naples, FL

There’s something so casually comfortable about Barbatella though they call themselves ‘fine dining’ — clearly they do both well.

Their food transports you to Italy and has you remembering that little trattoria in Bologna, the food market in Florence, or the Michelin meal you had in Sorrento.

The food is creative and delicious, including the pizza which, though not Neapolitan, is equally amazing with the freshness and combination of ingredients. The casual atmosphere on 3rd Street South is cozy too!

Trattoria Angela

835 Vanderbilt Beach Rd (The Pavilion), Naples, FL

If you haven’t tried Trattoria Angela yet, it’s not surprising since it’s fairly new. This small Italian eatery opened in north Naples in late 2022.

From our experiences so far dining here, we think it just may be the best Italian restaurant in Naples.

With inside and outdoor dining, inside is definitely the more charming of the two, where you can browse the wine cart and select a bottle of wine to start off your meal.

Chef Enrico Esposito and his wife Angela ran a restaurant in their native Naples, Italy before coming to the US where he eventually became Chef at BiCE on 5th Avenue.

Like BiCE, the braised veal shank over saffron risotto is delicious, but so are the other pasta specialties.

If Neapolitan cuisine is where your heart is at, try Trattoria Angela soon.

Campiello

1177 3rd St S, Naples, FL

The food here is self-described as “rustic, contemporary Italian” which means it’s traditional and tasty Italian, and also artfully presented.

Campiello is a favorite special occasion place (as in, some of their prices are as impressive as their prime 3rd Street South address), but the food is also a cut above.

We love their Balsamic Glazed Short Ribs (the accompanying ragout of smoked tomatoes and Sicilian onions are as yummy as the ribs themselves) and wood-fired pizzas.

The atmosphere at Campiello is relaxed and lends itself well to indulging in an extra cocktail or glass of wine.

Depending on your budget, you may enjoy it here occasionally or often, but either way it’s a must try for Italian cuisine.

The trouble with eating Italian food is that five or six days later you’re hungry again.

Alberto’s on Fifth

868 5th Ave S, Naples, FL

If you’ve traveled to northern Italy and fell in love with the unique regional food there, a visit to Alberto’s on Fifth should be on your list!

Chef Alberto Varetto hails from Torino (Turin), the capital city of Piemonte, and many of the dishes here are a delicious reflection of Piedmont.

The Taglierini ai Funghi con Salsiccia fatta in casa (homemade taglierini pasta with sauté mushrooms and housemade sausage) is a prime example.

So is the Agnolotti di Ricotta e Spinaci con la Salsa di Mascarpone e Parmigiano, a lovely presentation that features one of Piedmont’s most beloved foods, the pillowy pasta pocket known as agnolotti.

The food here may not be what many think of as typically Italian. It’s so much more. We especially love the Early & Late Night al Fresco menu!

Bice Ristorante (Temporarily Closed for Renovation)

300 5th Ave S, Naples, FL

BiCE occupies a quieter spot on glitzy 5th Avenue South and their Italian food is distinct and upscale with a menu that offers traditional and authentic ingredients with modern presentations.

One of their signature dishes — the classic Ossobuco di Vitello con Risotto alla Milanese (Braised Veal Shank Osso Buco) — is hearty and off-the-charts fantastic.

If that’s a bit on the heavy side, try the Pappardelle with mozzarella and fresh basil in tomato cream sauce, or the Tri-Colore Insalata of radicchio, endive and arugula with shaved parmigiano.

Italian food really reflects the people. It reflects like a prism that fragments into regions.

Osteria Tulia and Bar Tulia

466 and 462 5th Ave S, Naples, FL

Osteria Tulia and its sister eatery next door, Bar Tulia, serve classically rustic Italian food and the setting at both is just as comfy.

Both places continue to garner rave reviews, and we think they’re well deserved.

Every item we’ve eaten here reminds us of what we love most about good Italian food. Fresh ingredients, prepared well.

Like their homemade ricotta (that’s not always on the menu) or the equally simple Bucatini Cacio e Pepe with sheep cheese & cracked pepper.

The more casual Bar Tulia next door is just as good, though a bit more lively, and with an emphasis on well-crafted cocktails.

Bar Tulia also has a location at Mercato and offers a good Sunday brunch as well.

La Trattoria

878 5th Ave S, Naples, FL

If it’s pizza you’re craving — the true Neapolitan kind found on the streets of Napoli — the pizza at La Trattoria is the closest I’ve come to my own Pizza Love Story.

This is how Neapolitan pizza is made, with a pillowy wood-charred crust and doughy, slightly-undercooked center. The only thing they don’t do is leave the pie uncut, though they will if you ask them.

La Trattoria is among a handful of places with the best pizza in Naples Florida!

Everything I’ve eaten the dozens of times I’ve dined there has been tasty and authentically prepared. And every single time I go someone around me orders the homemade Carbonara made in the giant wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano, diverting my attention for a moment, and I vow to try it next time.

But for me and maybe you too, it usually comes down to the pizza.

Molto Trattoria

368 5th Ave S, Naples, FL

Molto Trattoria has been like an old friend, one of our go-to restaurants on 5th Avenue whenever we want a casual place with consistently good food, which is most of the time.

Over the years, we’ve enjoyed apps and wine at the bar (including a bottle of Amarone that inspired a trip to Valpolicella), special occasion dinners with family, and many a casual plate of pasta.

But I was especially blown away recently when they had homemade tajarin on the menu, a delicate spaghetti-like pasta shape with a squared edge that’s local to Piemonte.

All of their pastas and sauces are homemade. This one was particularly delicious, but it should have come as no surprise.

If you’re looking for an Italian place that feels good every time, this may be your place. Truly one of the best authentic Italian restaurants in Naples.

Caffé Milano

800 5th Avenue S., Naples FL

Since 2015 Caffé Milano has been offering a modern take on Italian rustic dishes from different regions in Italy in a fun and casual setting.

They have a unique variety of gourmet Italian dishes like Eggplant Tortino and Sicilian Tuna, along with traditional homemade favorites like Gnocchi alla Sorrentina and a wine list that features some excellent Italian varietals.

Whether you go for lunch or dinner, leave room for one of their signature desserts — Tiramisu, or the housemade gelato.

Bonus — leashed dogs who mind their manners are welcome at the outdoor umbrella tables.
